Position Description

The Physician Assistant (PA) coordinates the provision of medical care in the orthopedic clinic and may perform medical functions only in the fields, for which he/she has been trained, approved, and registered, and will be re-evaluated for reappointment every two (2) years. The PA provides assistance under direct supervision of the orthopedic surgeon toward complete assessments of signs, symptoms, analysis, treatment, and care of the orthopedic patient.

This includes:

  • Perform an initial medical assessment of patients and determine the course of medical treatment in consultation with the physician (as needed and/or desired by the physician).
  • Initiate appropriate treatment, perform procedures, administer medication, and perform patient education.
  • Work cooperatively with nursing services personnel.
  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned. May be expected to work varying hours, holidays, and weekends.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform orthopedic assessments of patients.
  • Perform timely history and physical examination of patient.
  • Determine appropriate diagnostic work-up and course of medical treatment for patient.
  • Maintain competence in patient treatment.
  • Access and manage pain and symptoms appropriately.
  • Assist with patient education involving the whole patient care and plan of treatment.
  • Perform aspirations and injections.
  • Perform application and removal of all types of tractions, casts, splints, and other immobilization devices and equipment.
  • Assist with and perform digital blocks, hematoma blocks, and the use of local anesthetics.
  • Assist with and perform the reduction of fractures and dislocations.
  • Assist with patient preparation to include draping and positioning.
  • Assist with all procedures to include tissue retraction, suturing of tissues, cutting of suture, closing of the operative case, and application of any appropriate appliance.
  • Perform drain maintenance/removal.
  • Perform application of casts, splints, traction, and other orthopedic devices and equipment.
  • Make daily rounds on patients.
  • Institute and execute routine post-operative orders of the supervising physician.
  • Chart progress and other notes as necessary.
  • Dictate notes and discharge summaries.
  • Order labs, x-rays, MRIs, CTs, bone scans, and any therapy.
  • Prescribe medications.
  • Perform ER 1st call.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program.
  • Current Physician Assistant License – Kansas State Board of Healing Arts.
  • NCCPA – National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants. Must be certified or eligible for certification. Certification must be completed within one year.
  • OPA- Certified Orthopedic Physician Assistant through the National Board of Certification of Orthopedic Physician’s Assistants (NBCOPA).
  • BLS – Satisfactory course completion with current card.

Position is with Coffey Health System, located in Burlington KS. Burlington is one hour south of Topeka and roughly an hour and 15 min from the Kansas City area.
